I can only imagine from afar the level of fear that the Iraqi's have had to deal with in the past decades. Fear is a paralyzing emotion and when not put into some larger perspective becomes the defining factor in life. I know because I am often afraid and when it consumes me, I see everything through the prism of this fear. When this happens, life stops and is replaced by images of catastrophe, failure and death. There are no attempts to distinguish between rational and irrational fear. All possibilities supporting irrational fear dominate and one stops being able to function except for that portion of one's mind that keeps on churning out its messages of fear.
Lim, you really do need sleep. And you need to get unparalyzed by your fear or you will be dead inside. I say this to you as someone who has let the wrong kind of fear rob me of rare opportunities for happinesses and a more meaningful life.

I appreciate the armchair psychoanalysis, but I'm not paralyzed by it. There were attacks on polling stations near my family's home in Baghdad. How would you feel? WOuld you be able to sleep? I think I'm pretty normal. The current situation definitely doesn't make me happy though. Oh, that's pretty rational too.

Isn't it nice that you now live in a place where you can choose not to go vote? Where if you do vote, you don't have to vote for Saddam?
