How did 'Liberal' become a curse word? And why isn't 'Conservative' an even more obscene word than it is?
Proud to be a Liberal or Progressive (or whatever the current term is…)
"Liberal" became a curse word because liberals allowed it to happen. "Conservative" isn't an obscene word because the liberals still, for the most part, allow the conservatives to frame the discussion.
It's like the venom spewed at the ACLU. If you're opposed to the ACLU, then you are opposed to the Constitution of the United States, and to civil liberties generally.
The ACLU was one of the few groups to challenge FDR's unconstitutional imprisonment of Japanese Americans during World War II. The Quakers also provided assistance to the 'Internees'.
