I was watching PBS's Newshour this evening and heard a commentator suggesting that the election of Obama would be a sign that racism is over, that we had defeated it at last. Obviously the commentator was a middle-aged, upper-class white guy…

I thought Bono and Brangelina had already cured racism. Or was that poverty? AIDS? The heartbreak of psoriasis? Something?
On the other hand, while "racism is over" is an obvious hyperbole, it is remarkable how much the political landscape has changed in my lifetime, comparing Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton to, for example, Shirley Chisholm.
