Interesting. I have always likened the internet to a grand experiment in non-aggressionist anarcho-capitalism. Thus, attempting to inject an element of socialism (ie: through governmental control and/or censorship) is, as you state, doomed to failure.
Still, I must ask you if it is your expectation that writing your senator can have any effect on the Safe Port Act? I am not an American, but it nonetheless interests me if such a course of action could potentially change the outcome of the legislation. Would it not be more effective to submit a petition of some sort?

No, writing my senators AFTER they passed the bill had no effect except inform them of my displeasure. However at that time President Bush could have refused to sign it (which obviously didn't happen.)
As a result, a coalition of poker players has organized called Poker Players Alliance. American poker players are more numerous and potentially more influential than what our current government representatives acknowledge. Hopefully they will be better organized and more motivated when more ridiculous legislation is considered.
