Lina,
Regarding water consumption.. In Dubai as I remember they extract sea water from soil, after it goes through a filtering phase.
They have one fresh water reserve in a place called al aweer which they use for drinking and household use.

Interesting post. Thanks for the detailed perspective about the city of Dubai. I've never been there, but I can't help but feel exactly the same thing you are feeling. People talk about it all the time, but I just can't relate to it.

Yeah, good for you, you don't like Dubai because its tacky and fake. At least its a civilized city where people follow the rules and don't smoke and throw trash everywhere, and even better everyone is just someone. There is no I'm the son of this and I"m that.
Stick to Amman and its fakeness I suggest

Dubai has very little Oil. Shows your experience. Everyone in the Arab world is jealous of Dubai specially the people in Amman. First they need to fix their attitude before they judge other cities.

Dubai, Amman or most of elsewhere in this muddle east is fake because most of it, as is the language we're using right now, isn't ours and is borrowed. What are we proud of: buildings built by foreign engineers, cars from Germany, bathroom fixtures from Italy, watches from Switzerland, oil pumped with American Drills, Clothing from Spain, foreign institutional charity and what have you. Even our correct attitudes and behavior tally western thought systems. I'd say Tafileh has got more soul and originality than Amman, Dubai, Manama and Kuwait lumped together.

pls add that Dubai isn't really Arab, with 80 percent of its population non arab... it'll be interesting to see how it would turn out with an Arab majority.

I've never been to Dubai myself, but well if it is clean and organised, that's more than what most of the region can say.
I agree with "Moi" on the borrowed bit, but to a certain extent, all cultures borrow, and have borrowed from each other as far as civilizations go, they mixed it with their own culture, came up with something new and improve, or if not so, simply different. Again ive never been to Dubai, but im pretty sure there is something different about it. heck most of the world "borrowed" from the Arab/ middle-eastern/ mesapotomian/ ancient egyptian cultures at one point or another throughout history so I suppose it is fine if we "Borrow" now.
As for the Taxis Lina, well I suppose having to call a taxi instead of waiting for one in the street is not such a bad thing, I personally almost got into a million accidents in Amman because of Taxi's stopping suddenly in the middle of the street to answer to someone calling. And as amusing as the "character" of the Taxi's in amman is, dont you sometimes wish with all your might that you get into a taxi that doesnt stink and has...well a "mild" Character, to put it mildly.
anyway I enjoyed the post, Dubai is definately one of the places I want to visit someday.
