Heya from NZ! I think your sanity is a good choice over the marathon - and you're right, there will always be another marathon. There won't be another PhD (or hopefully not!!!). Maybe you should do some half marathons for a while?
I have been struggling with my (tiny in comparison) training program too, ran a 11km race the other wkend with a slight fever, was happy b/c still finished 2 mins quicker than last time - but then had to spend all wkend in bed sleeping! How you serious types manage to do marathons is beyond me!!! Still, maybe 5 years down the line...
