I purchased a vintage buttonholer too and have the same problem with the stitch length. I'm using it on a regular basis though because it's so nice to know that each buttonhole is exactly the same.

I noticed online that they usually show the belts tied like you have instead of belted the 'proper' way. Of course you will eventually put eyelets in your belt but I like the way you're wearing it now.
I never noticed before that the chest flap buttons over the other side of the coat! Very interesting.

I've seen those Singer buttonhole makers before, but somehow never even considered that they could be used on non-vintage machines.
