Yes, you're pretty much correct in your assumption. Basting is usually a long running stitch that is used to temporarily hold multiple layers in place prior to actual sewing. Some sewing machines have a basting stitch (an extra long straight stitch). Quilt making has a large variety of basting methods, since all those layers need to be held in place prior to the actual quilting. Personally I hand baste in a high contrast thread so that I can find it later to pull it out (no knots anywhere, so I can just yank on one end).
As for 'mark', it sounds like they could be referring to a chalk mark or tailor's tack (see explanation) as a placement guide.
Like you did, using another source with a good explanation (and pictures) for something like the fly front or the back vent, is what I'd do.
I have 2 copies of Patrones, and yet to make anything from them. That said, I bought them on e bay from Stoff-Art and they came with a Spanish sewing glossary translation. They ask for additions to their glossary so I am assuming that you can download it from them. www.stoff-art.de

I think Tany would also agree that their sizes are not as consistent as BWOF. I find that I need bigger than they say for bottoms and smaller than they say for tops.
