Responding to an older entry, Ash.
I unashamedly admit I enjoyed PGL. Yes, I was horrified at the news of the Cameron Highlands fiasco (especially being an employee of the film's producers at the time), but referring strictly to the merit of the film alone, I felt it was an extremely good Malaysian movie, and just as impressive even on the international front.
While undoubtedly there will be Malaysian viewers who will poo-poo the film for its slow pace, can you really imagine a love story of this kind being played out any other way? Films dealing with this type of theme must be treated in a certain way... the pace, I felt, was just nice. Somehow, I feel this opinion might be shared by those with an acquired taste for other foreign films (the French too have a flair for the long drawn out tale).
Malaysians who enjoy films like Cinta Kolesterol, give PGL a miss please, instead of being nasty about it in the cinema. I had half a mind to tell people walking out (from boredom) halfway through the movie to just give the film a chance.
Sigh.
Maybe its just not that we arent ready to make such films, maybe our audiences just arent ready to appreciate them.
people are very, very honest these days. some bosses at work feel no shame requesting their staffs to help them with their Masters assignments.
Shen: FINALLY I hear from you! Busy, busy bee, eh? But I agree. PGL to me, worked as a film, which was how I judged it. As you said, I couldn't have imagined it being shot any other way, and as for our audiences just UN-willing to try something outside of the usual Yusof Haslam melodramas, well BOO to them.
Like I said, I'm glad it is going abroad, and maybe it'll be a start.
Shen: And the other half who try to tell people to give the movie a chance get called names or at least shot back at with "you bash people's opinions". O'well...must say that you have a point there.
PY.. I know of a particular boss who did that too. And he's working for an MNC.. and he got a distinction. Go figure.
