The voice of him that crieth in the Bloggerness!

Gravatar It frustrates me - people like Mitchell will make thousands of dollars complaining (sometimes about things that make no frickin sense), but do they do anything (other than in a photo-oppy sort of way) to actually help with some of society's problems?

For every celebrity who deigns to show up at some "benefit" (where they probably also get a "swag bag" of goodies for attending), there are a thousand ordinary Christians (or, heck, ordinary Jews, for that matter) out actually DOING something to alleviate hunger or homelessness or despair.

One of the things that really pushes my buttons is when someone complains that the people who are actually TRYING to fix problems aren't doing it perfectly, or aren't doing it to the complainer's preferences. And the complainer is usually sitting on his or her hands, doing little if anything, to help fix the problem.

Gravatar Serious: I'll back you on all the comments and frustrations created by this situation. Why more thinking people (of any religion, or none) can't see the duplicity of it's okay to slam Christians, but not any other religion/people/group, I just don't get. It's one of the few positives (only?) that I've heard about South Park.

Funny: New York Yankees and Starbucks - the Evil Empires. I prefer local coffee shops, anyway, for taste and atmosphere, plus they have free wi-fi.

I've appreciated that about SP too; they're pretty equal-opportunity obnoxious. (Jew Scouts, for heaven's sake!)

As for why, Mark has it under a category that explains it pretty well: Because the Vatican doesn't issue fatwas. Along with that, our cultural mores are of Christian origin, and so people who want there not to be any moral rules blame Christianity for creating them. It's like the kid who's mad at Daddy for establishing a bedtime or not raising his allowance.

I know it's not logical in America to blame the Catholic Church for all of those rules and stuff, since our Christianity is mostly Protestant, and Fundamentalism has had more to do with shaping American culture than Catholicism. But the Catholics are the biggest single group, and have the most uniform rules, and so they've come to symbolize the whole shebang. Besides, we have nuns with rulers and pervo-priests; that's always good for a stereotype or two.
