That's about the best analysis of Batman I've ever read. I think the new version of Batman is the product of poor writers who mistake jerkiness with "being edgy and realistic."
I miss the old Batman who was buddies with Superman and Robin. I wonder if he'll ever come back.

Thank you very much!
You have written an excellent Batman essay that wonderfully analysis Batman's psyche.
I too have argued against several folks that consider Batman crazy. Most of these folks consider Batman automatically crazy. When I asked them why? They said it was because of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns.
Honestly, when you research the standard classic Batman he was never insane. Batman actually tried to work within the system, but found he couldn't do so because the system was corrupt. If the system wasn't corrupt Bruce Wayne would have become a cop. His costume is nothing more than a uniform as normal as the clothing of soldiers and policemen. He is basically a freelance detective working with the Gotham City police. Best of all what several Batman readers miss is that Batman does want to have a normal life. The definitive Batman comics by Steve Englehart collected in Batman: Strange Apparitions have Bruce Wayne wanting to give up being Batman, desiring to get married, and contemplating settling down. This is a constant Batman theme that has been used multiple times since in the best Batman comics. Examples include Batman: Blind Justice, Batman: Going Sane, Batman: Year Two, and Matt Wagner's Dark Moon Rising. The ironic truth is that Batman which most Batman readers think is a mystical immortal god is nothing more than a job created by Bruce Wayne so that he could attempt to lead a normal life.

Good article, just wanted to mention that it wasn't Starlin who revamped Jason Todd, it was Max Allan Collins.
