Gravatar I'm almost certain that "sign it and live" is an outright lie. If Carrion were to disappear, he could never contest the contract as "under duress". As for compensation, it might even be in the contract, and be considerable, but no point in paying a dead man.

Basically, not signing, and stalling, was the only way Carrion could have gotten out of there alive.

Gravatar But then, if Cossack plans to kill Carrion anyway, why does he need Carrion's signature at all?

Surely he could have Carrion's signature forged decently enough, especially since Carrion's pen control is likely to produce a shaky signature as is. And a forged document would be free of unnecessary and question-raising blood stains.

Furthermore, if Carrion's dead, then there's nobody to question the authenticity of the forged document. His conveniently-timed murder may make a court pause, but then they'd do the same thing if presented with a bloodied contract that was shakily signed by a subsequently-murdered (or missing) Carrion.

Gravatar I think it's just a coloring mistake. The Boston recipe for baked beans takes brown sugar, too. Also, the v/o states "raw sugar," which is basically just brown sugar -- since it hasn't been processed to remove the molasses to make it white. But since this has the air of a children's commercial and since I'm sure some ad exec somewhere said "Kids don't know sugar unless it's white," that's what the cartoon shows.
That's what I'd figure anyway.

Gravatar Hi Loren and All:

Just thought I'd jump in to try and clear this up.

Cossack really wouldn't have thought he'd have to kill Carrion. My thoughts were the time he spent in the charming Russian's company would be enough to keep his mouth shut later. The Cossack is a part of a large Russian mob. Carrion would know that any action against the Cossack legally, and there would be nowhere on Earth he could hide from them. Like the Mafia, and such, etc.

Also, up until that point, Carrion seemed like a lightweight. The Cossack would assume he'd fall in line. He'd done nothing to indicate he'd act as boldly as he does by story's end. I wanted that to be a surprise to my readers and the Cossack.

As for the white sugar, Flint is there. It's a commercial for kids, so the sugar is shiny white. Only Mom's care about brown sugar!

BTW, the Cossack gets his this week in Spirit #9

Best,
Darwyn

Gravatar Somehow, I don't think Carrion would be the type to go to a lawyer about this, let alone be in a position to do so.

Gravatar That contract is now smeared with blood. Wouldn't that raise a few suspicions?

Gravatar It may be a marketing gimmick. Everyone knows sugar is white, therefore that's the way the make it look in the ads.
