UI,
I am in favour of a United Ireland but how do you see a UI coming about within this century? Do you think enough unionists will have been converted by then or something different?

No way. The only time Ireland was ever united was under the English (one of the great ironies of our history).
Apart from which: we're a nation already (see my post at http://bigulsterman.blogspot.com...t-palaver.html)
.
Anthems have to be able to be sung with the heart, they have to have a climax in the penultimate line and they have to be memorable, and for my money there's only one sond that fits the bill: Danny Boy.

I agree - it would be perfect - But the loyalists would never go for it... too steeped in IRA folklore for starters...
As long as it isn't Ireland's call that they sing at Rugby Internationals... nice lyrics - terrible tune.

I suppose the Broad Black Brimmer is out then?
Not Danny Boy, under any circumstances!!
I wouldn't mind "a Nation Once Again". Penned by the Father of Irish Republicanism.

"When a United Ireland occurs, which looks to be very soon in this century"
A colleague of mine, Oxford graduate like myself, and not exactly someone who would be described as a hardline unionist, commented on another site recently having seen this site:
"I've never felt more divided from our Southern friends in my life as after reading his bigoted rubbish, ironically."
And my response to him still stands..."with characters like this around, a "united Ireland" is about as likely as a Julian Clary-Kelly Brook wedding."

Mike,
Why do you continue getting so personal? It's getting a bit worrying at this point.
I won't be allowing any more venomous bile on my site from you in the future which is why your ad hominem posts are futile.
If I believed in censorship I would have banned you already. Sorry to say but if you continue to make your jibes then I'll be forced to do just that.
If you want to insult Irish people then Our Wee Cunt..uh Country is the place to go for that.
Oh and I really don't give a stuff about what you and your mates think.

I think Mike's point is that he and his friends have to like you before they'll vote for a united Ireland. I bet you didn't know you held such power, eh?

Oh dear. You must not be aware that the Irish team was made up of players from all over the island. In fact the captain of the Irish team - Kieran McGeeny - is from County Armagh.
Shame you can't support the island of your birth. I guess all those years in Canada have made you abandon your roots, eh william?
The Aussies won because they kicked the Irish players off the park and behaved like thugs.
It was a disgrace and I have no problem if they discontinue the series over it.

William,
As already stated, the team WAS an All-Ireland team.
The Australian win was a victory for thuggery (which is sad as they had some excellent footballers). Hopefully Nicky Brennan will listen to Boylan, McGrath et al and call time on this nonsense.

William,
The Aussies were thugs. Are you suggesting that "prods" could match them at thuggery? For shame, sir.
I don't think they would have made any difference anyway - we're all poncy European Christians after all. A few muslims on the other hand...
Ryan O'Keefe would have been laughing on the other side of his face after a Hamas-esque suicide tackle...literally!

Our nation's anthem should be in Gaeilge not English. The current anthem is perfect.

Okidoke. So high tackles, elbows in the face and punching men when they are on the ground is "tough".
Interesting!

Amazing, only in Ireland could a amadáin purporting to be a nationalist call for our national anthem to be changed, and changed to a shite RA folk ballad at that.
Our anthem is 11 short lines of pure nationalistic pride.
Shame on the farce that is “United Irelander”.

No only in Ireland do people like yourself come to the conclusion that being a 'nationalist' means you must blindly accept everything that is told to you. Not so much nationalism as fascism. Sorry if my opinion offends you Il Duce.
Oh and how is A Nation Once Again a "Ra folk ballad" when it was penned in the 19th century, decades before the 'RA' came into existence? Now who's the "amadáin"?
"Our anthem is 11 short lines of pure nationalistic pride."
The Irish anthem is a lyrically inept song with a shite tune.

The national anthem is the song the 1916 leaders sang as they sacrificed their lives for this beuatiful country,

The first time the IRA flag was flown was in the 1800s when the Feinians invaded Canada.
The national anthem should stay because men better than us made it the tune we sing ans also the men who faught in the war of independence sang that song so...
