Maybe this is a little hyperbole, but I can't help but think of Thomas Cahill's book title in this situation. Once again the Irish saved civilization.

"You cannot extinguish the Irish passion for freedom."

I agree with every word that you have written there UI. You and every other
Irish man and woman who voted no have spoken for far more people than you can probably comprehend. Stay vigilant and keep up the good work.

Thank God the treaty didn't go through. Can you imagine what it would have been like if these people had've gotten MORE authority from the member states?!

One thing that I am happy about though is that it seems Gordon Brown will back up the Irish result, even if few others will. That should at least deliver some clout on the issue on the European scene

Re: 08 US presidential race

I was interested in some of your comments regarding the 08 US presidential race. Regarding candidate Obama, he may be able to write an engaging book, but that does not assure a successful presidency. His tenure in the US Senate has yielded no noteworthy accomplishments. He does not work with the opposition party, unlike his opponent. Little is known about specifics when it comes to policies. To many people in the US, Obama is not really a known entity...his image is known, and that image draws a lot of supporters. But beyond the image, what is there?

The comparison to President Kennedy is not accurate. President Kennedy emphasized that citizes should work for the US, rather than expecting the US to solve their individual problems. Also President Kennedy made it clear that the the US would act decisively to defend the cause of freedom. In his day, that meant military force.

Obama would differ with these ideas. He is not like Kennedy.

Many....many people in the US do not beleive Obama's "Gloom and Doom" vision of how the US is doing. The US press will tell you something different.

Obama for president? What could the US count on? What price would the US have to pay to find out what an Obama presidency would be like? I hope we never know.

Ron,

You are obviously closer to the situation than I am but from my perspective over here he seems to have a lot of good ideas. I guess there's always a risk in endorsing someone and trusting them with your vote, but if he was on this side of the Atlantic and up for election I reckon I'd support him.
