You should check out the album "Le Fil," by Camille (one of the Nouvelle Vague singers -- and if you haven't heard the Nouvelle Vague album, you should check that out, too).
I just bought vols. 1 and 2 of the Femmes de Paris series -- swinging 60s French pop.

I think it would much simpler, and therefore efficient to listen to Steely Dan's 'Decade of Steely Dan' greatest hits.... the silver album... if it's timeless leaning towards mortal linear death type of feeling you are looking for.
