That very thing happened in Chicago about 10 years ago. Poor fellow was strolling around the very touristy Watertower area when a "microwave"-sized chunk of ice fell from a nearby building and brained him. It was awful. After that they started putting up barriers forcing one to walk as far away from the building as the sidewalk will allow when there's a lot of ice about.
(You don't even want to know what happened when windowcleaners dropped a pane of glass from a high floor.)
