Brilliant article. Confidence seems to be an important issue and I am sometimes afraid my son catches up in my own lack of confidence.

Thanks! This was an important post for me when I wrote it. Too many people see boredom as something that needs to be avoided at all costs. I have felt for a long time that it was getting a bad rap - boredom is a wonderful motivator!

My teenage homeschooled son worked this out for himself a few years ago. We were both working on motivation issues at the time. Another aspect of boredom he discovered was that he often had patches of boredom when he was waiting for something. This could be waiting for a computer game to come out, waiting for a parcel in the post, or simply waiting for the next big thing to grab his attention, which is what you wrote about.
