Growing up in the southwest one thing was certain, the people most likely to discriminate against undocumented immigrants were Hispanic people themselves. The US born, often children, grandchildren, and even great-great-great-grandchildren of US born ancestors.
As a group they were the first to condemn, belittle, and in some cases commit outright criminal acts upon the newcomers. God forbid anyone should have ever have confused THEM with THOSE people.
By upping the stakes and playing, at the very least, around the edges of the race issue the GOP has gone and done what many feared the most, lumped all Hispanic people together as one unified group.
Unfortunately I can't say with any degree of honesty that this is a Republican thing. Democratic candidates, particularly here in the southwest, have been more than happy to jump on the "blame-the-immigrants" bandwagon.
Personally I'm glad they are showing their hands. Call it what it really is because race, ethnicity, and language IS what all this hoopla really is all about.
Not Your Mama is right about reactionaries on both sides of the aisles. Harold Ford has made "border security" an issue in his campaign. And still the Corker ads call him a "liberal." As a native Tennessean, I know the south has a long history of xenophobia, especially when the economy is in a downturn.
Nevada is lucky I guess...at least those of us not foaming at the mouth have Dinah Titus to vote for (basically a moderate/centrist kind of dem) and she hasn't jumped on the hate-wagon. If Gibbons wins I'll need a prefrontal lobotomy though.
One day when this minority called latinos has enough power to make great influence on our nations legislation process.. they GOP will wonder why on earth no one will make compromises with them and trust their word.... amazingly they seriously won't understand why..
