I was cooking breakfast for customers at our small cafe in Cottage Grove. Hard to believe it's been 6 years already...
I was getting ready to go to work at G.I. Joes. I sat around all morning, watched the second tower collapse, then, I had to work. People didn't really come in that day, and if they did, it was the only thing they could talk about.
It was night in Korea. We had just finished replacing another system with ours on one of the aircraft and I headed in to start filling out the forms. The crew chiefs had a TV on but I didn't look at it until I heard the first "holy *9/7%#". That was the first one. I was wondering how a pilot could be that far off course. I finished the forms and looked up just in time to see the second one hit. I went back out to the jet to help push in our equipment and told the guys to go up to the crew chief office and check out the TV. We talked about it a bit and made sure the rest of our shop turned on their TVs so they could be ready for anything. I went home and drank a lot while watching the news. It took about 4 hours to get to work the next afternoon. We got a good briefing the next day that told us a lot of things that weren't on the news and while the fact that a lot of people's lives were saved that day, it didn't lessen the anger or tell me where to direct it.
A couple of months later I went to Saudi for a few months and then to Cyprus. I saw it was a time a for a change I guess.
