You'll get no argument from me, Sean...this was a total bonehead move on McCain's part. He should have waited to see if anybody even wanted a piece of Willie before running off to his buddies in the 527 media.
Note to McCain: They aren't going to support you in the long term anyway. Didn't the NYT smear teach you anything?

***BEGIN AARON'S QUOTE***
I don't think McCain was wrong. Campaigns are about substance. Cunningham is not substance -- he is an entertainer. He (Bill) is a good cheerleader perhaps, but McCain needs people of substance vouching for him such as Rob Portman. Its an uphill battle against Obama anyway and what McCain doesn't need is fodder for people to accuse him and his camp of being racist. Emphasizing an "islamic" middle name does that, like it or not. I actually think McCain was smart by doing this. He allows the facts of Obama's middle name to get out, i.e. Hussein which sounds scary to most Americans, yet acts like the good guy to say that it went to far. Its actually politically brilliant if you think about it!

I beg to differ. Look, I think Willie gets a little nuts from time to time too...but if the national Team McCain isn't aware of who they had coming to this schindig and relied on local Team McCain...they got what they asked for. Willie is Willie...and to be perfectly honest, the AP story I read on this "scandal" makes it out to be McCain's Folly, not Willie's... If McCain wanted to apologize for it, the least he could have done was suggest thta while he supports Willie's First Amendment rights to speak his mind, he didn't appreciate the tone and/or content of comments THAT HE DIDN'T EVEN HEAR......

Yeah, Aaron. Like "Barack" and "Obama" are All-American names.
Matt, you're not going to have to worry about me chasing any supporters for McCain away. He's doing a good job of it himself.
All together now, let's say it:
"President O b a m a."
You made a very good point, though. When people sit out, they tend to sit the whole thing out. I have some local races we're going to need help on.

Gary: I think McCain ought to just lie low with the conservative outreach thing...it just isn't credible...and it doesn't feel like he's really trying anyway, just going through the motions... So why do it at all?
We do need help down-ticket this cycle...and that is why I think it is important that McCain figure this out. We need fighters, not collaborators...
Aaron: No worries... It happens to the best of us...

You know if he doesnt like his middle name then change it. Come on it was a conservative crowd and Willie was trying to fire them up. Aaron's comments are dead on to what i am afraid of. ANY and I mean ANY criticism of Obama is going to be considered racist. True emphasizing his middle name is not substance but if it is already being taken offense to then we are in for a long ride. Mark my words, every conservative is going to be labeled a racist before this is over. By the way half the stories have Willie being ofensive with the Hussein comment and half for the hack comment. Either way, uhhhh free speech???????
And Gary you know it. We have to get people fired up to get them to the polls.

The more I think about this the more mad I get. We are lacking people with conviction that will speak up at a national level in the Republican Party. It is nice to say we need to cooperate and reach out and compromise but where are your convictions? Where is your machisimo? Where is your guts? I am hot!!!!! You know sometimes you will not please everyone. Why try pleasing those who are not going to vote for you?????

WTF was MAC thinking. As a college republican, I have been drinking the McCain Kool-Aid for about a month. I supported mayor Giuliani until he came in third in Florida. I was left with no choice. The true conservative made a racist comment in the Virginia senate race in 06. I was at the rally today in Cincinnati, and willy hit Obama right on target. I saw absolutely noting wrong with his statements. This should have been about Rob Portman endorsing McCain, (who would make a good vp). However, no, McCain had to go and please the liberal media. If he continues, conservatives will stay home.
I am wondering if Mac has what it takes to win this race. Does he really want to win this race....Or should we already say President Elect Obama

I am no fan of Bill Cunningham (BC).
But the McCain campaign should have asked someone, anyone at all, locally about BC's brand of verbal fireworks. The incident never should have happened. The race this summer and fall is going to be tough enough without BC joining Ann Coulter in freaking support of Clinton. And, dammit, I didn't even know Rob Portman had endorsed McCain until I read this posting and the thread. What in the name of good political sense was McCain doing with his apology?! As I've written elsewhere, SW Ohio is the key to GOP success in the state, and Ohio is a vital ingredient in GOP success nationally. I'm very, very concerned about the long-term effects of this brouhaha. It never should have happened. It never should have happened.

Bottom line even if you think Willie was ot of line or dont like him (which I dont think he was and I do like him btw) you shouldnt throw one of your own under the bus. Funny McCain came out and asked Obama (if I am allowed to use his name) to rebuke Howard Dean's comments. Everyone who believes this will happen stand on your head........
