Unfortunately, the GOP shot down a Democratic amendment which would have required the IG to finish his investigation no later than 60 days. Now, there is no set timetable for the IG to complete his investigation which still cannot begin until the legislation passes.
Why not just vote on the articles now and let the Senate conduct its trial as to the merit of the articles?
Constitutionally, that is all that is required. But if you recall in the Clinton impeachment, there was a committee process that reviewed the Starr Report, took extended testimony, and conducted an investigation before the House approved actual articles of impeachment.
To compare it criminal law, it's like the House acts as a grand jury and takes the articles and sees if there is really sufficient evidence to charge the public official. It'll investigate it (in this case by assigning it to the IG's office apparently), vote on the articles and then (if approved) appoint members to serve as "prosecutors" in the Senate.
Well, I'm very surprised and the Democrats have proven me wrong. Just when it appeared they were backing off of impeachment, they file their articles. They've made the first move. I do not believe the Republicans should stand in the way. To that end, I agree with Mark. Vote on the articles and let the Senate and let the Senate conduct its trial.
And in October, we might have Lee Fisher as AG.
