Senator Voinovich was a great political winner who happened to be a Republican, and by extension he was a great asset to the Republican party, but that is not the same as saying he was a great enactor of Republican policy.
From Cleveland, he gained the trust of the NE and therefore was able to produce statewide Republican majorities in his elections approaching 65-75%.
A "Fixer", he was a welcome relief to Cleveland Kucinich defaults and Celeste liberal spending.
The Senator had an "authentic" middle class touch; his protoge, Sen. DeWine, had a similar touch, watered down, and on the earnest side.
Nice guy popularity was their campaigning and governing style. Sen. Voinovich helped even more passive candidates in down ticket races.
There is so much more to say and consider, and many vote regrets, but in sum, it strikes me that while he was no Reagan, he still was a winner and a likeable Republican.
I'm more a Portman and Kasich supporter, but I shudder to think if they lose elections that Voinovich could have won.
I shudder to think positive policy will not win, and we'll have to wait for the Democrats' inevitable failure and a "fixer" to follow.
If not Voinovich, and if not Portman and Kasich, then what?
Petro, Montgomery and the rest have proven to be losing candidates taken out with the tide.
Certainly the party cannot stomach too many more Blackwell-O'Brien losses.
Sen. Voinovich, fare well, thank you and please vote to reduce the size of spending AND taxes in your final Congress.
After you, I hope for even better Republicans but I don't know. Perhaps you were as good as I have a right to expect.

P.S. Onward, Rep. Kasich and Rep. Portman!

Time for a new breed! Let's leave the Taft days in the past. Keep Montgomery, Petro, DeWine, and Blackwell with them.
