Monahan asks: "are the ethics lobbyists asking for too much at once....?" Youg Jurnee Smollett in The Great Debaters proclaimed "No, the time for justice, the time for freedom, and the time for equality is always, is always right now!"

Hear, hear!

Um, the gravy train has ethics? A thin gruel at best.

damn, i love it when folks get on monahan. and this one's another great post. you should be one of those "alligators," no doubt. you have more inside info than the political elite could possibly know.

on second thought - let them wallow in their ignorance.

I saw m-pyre was/is 5 on the blognetnews influence ranking from last week. I thought it'd be rated better. I'll continue to link and comment!

Ran into someone last night, who said he used to be a big m-pyre fan until things went dark... He was pleasantly surprised to hear things are on fire again over here.

Maybe he'll come back!

Thanks to everyone for making this a lively and useful site!

from a 2005 post on SWOPblogger:

The I'm Gonna' Pretend to be Giving the Inside Scoop, Yet Only Spout the Establishment Line Award

Goes to none other than our very own Joe Monahan. With all the scandals going on in La Politica, only blogged about the little stuff. It seems his Alligators have their heads in the mud...

Love that award name!

....this 'gator thing is a crack up. I've had at least three people in the last year whisper to me...with a sloppy grin attached...that they are in fact one of these.

Whatever floats your boat. La Politica is a one big game for these people, and feeding tips is all fun and games.

The problem to me is it speaks from the opposite end about this problem of anonymous types posting/writing blogs. I just do not like it. I like to know "who" is behind opinions...and that they understand the responsibility of having a public voice. It's not a free ride.

It also feels incredibly chicken shit. It's easy to flip off someone on the road from inside a car while wearing sunglasses. let's see how brave you are when the car stops and that flipped off person walks up to you.

All that, I realize the use of anonymous sources in the press is a never ending debate/problem, BUT, the difference is there's a sense that even an anonymous sources "stuff" is vetted in some manner.

Hopefully...

Interesting. Well, I think anonymity can be quite useful in a system that is built on the acquisition of and use of power. A lot of this for me points to how one builds credibility and then maintains it. This can be done in the blogosphere just as it is in the mainstream press of "real journalists." Monahan clearly was ahead of the game in the blogosphere, and didn't have a lot of competition to contend with in the early days (just a few years ago). I don't think he's paid a lot of attention to how to maintain his credibility though in what can only be considered an evolving landscape in New Mexico.
