That makes sense for a few reasons.
1. Your ride home is recuperation time after a day at work. The solitude is theraputic.
2. It can take a special mood to strike up a conversation with someone who has drifted out of your life.

i agree with dickey. additionally, you don't want to be trying to re-connect while trapped. i mean, what if, 20 minutes into the conversation you remember that you're not the same person you used to be, and he's not the same person he used to be, and your new personalities don't mesh the way they used to. and you're stuck sitting next to each other for another whole hour. yuck. best to go out for a drink, or "happen" to meet at a bar or party or something (yeah, yeah, not necessarily likely).
for some reason this post reminded me of that time he hugged your boobs at the eaton centre food court :)
