After the idioticness, remember this:
Part of the reason you're a good friend is because you care. And when you care, you give advice. Sometimes without thinking of it's appropriateness. But appropriateness is very grey with friends.
You may not have done the right thing, but it doesn't seem to have been totally wrong. It was part of being a good friend.

i agree with dickeybird and if this new friend sees past her pain, she may see that you were doing it out of love. hope she can forgive and you both can move on!! keep us posted.
