I had the same thought when I heard about this. I was thinking, "Well that's what you get for living so extravagantly, you don't need that stuff anyway, that money could've helped someone." And then I walked past a homeless person sitting on the sidewalk in front of a parking garage with a Jaguar in it, and again the same thought - the money for that Jaguar could've bought a cheaper, just as reliable car and helped out someone needy. But I also have to look at my own actions - I am sure I don't give as much as I could, I am sure I sometimes buy things I don't need. The consumer culture, the media culture, these absorb us like amoebas eating something and we have to be constantly vigilant and constantly striving. Simple life really is better! |
