Wow. All I have to say is AMEN. It's almost impossible for me to imagine how vastly better people's lives would be if our elected officials adhered to the KISS principle and Occam's Razor.
Unfortunately, I just don't see it happening. Ever. The complexity of the tax code allows politicians to favor to special interest groups. Social Security and Medicare brainwash Americans in to believing that the government is actually doing them a favor. It's the very definition of a vicious cycle.
Your post is a good argument for electing mathematians, scientists and engineers to public office instead of lawyers and MBAs.
Necessity is the mother of invention. When things are going well, the best minds leave government to the lawyers. When it gets really bad, leaders come forth with solutions. The status quo always looks engraved in stone, until the need is desperate.
It is painful, wasteful, inefficient, but it is human nature.
