Yes some apple pie please. As for why some miss class, I am myself today...but that is because I've gotten strep throat. Blah.
Heck, *I* am missing class today, and I'm the teacher! (We finally hit a point of sheer exhaustion.)
I have a couple of students that I think are just great people, but I know they're working outside the college, have families, etc., and they cannot keep up with everything on their plate. I do what I can to help, but at the end of the day, not all the turtles make it to the ocean. I weep inside when one of those types doesn't pass.
But when the college-age, non-working students who spend all their time hanging out in the halls and ask for extensions on homework because "I didn't get around to it" fail, I must admit I almost enjoy writing that "F" in the gradebook.

I think I'd love to be in your class. Except maybe for that fixed-form helping verbs part.
Even though it sounds like you have a lot of non-traditional students with other commitments, it's still possible that they're missing class because they haven't made it a priority. I wonder who's paying their tuition?
