Tell me what you really think.

The town I grew up in had two drive in burger joints... They've since gone out of business. The closest thing I've seen here is Sonic, and where I really love them... you pay a pretty penny for their stuff. I preffered though the cafe and steak house I worked at. When you ordered a burger there... You got a burger to top any and all... forget the fries... you'll be lucky if some of the burger doesn't go home with you. Hardee's had nothing on them. Of course that's also because not only could you get a traditional burger, but you could also order a buffalo burger for a modest price compared to what I've seen anywhere else.

Well one of the plusses of being from a really small town is you know everyone, including who is doing the cooking in every restaurant and burger shop in town. That leads to conversations like this...
So you want to go get a burger?
Well let's call first and see who is cooking tonight...if it's James I'm not hungry.

Gawd, I haven't thought about the Crimson Hogshead (NOT its real name) in every bit of two decades.
Grandma would always stop there after we went to the Market Formerly Known As Mills'.
I wonder what happened to the distinguishing characteristic of its signage...

we have Sonic, here, too, as the main drive-in, but there are still a few mom and pop type places around.
Of course after reading your post, I don't think I want a burger for a while. LOL

The town I grew up in had a great drive-in, and I believe it's still there. I'll be up in that neck of the woods next month--wonder if I can swing by for a burger and a large soft-serve cone (chocolate vanilla twist, please).

What I really miss is the playground in front of the screen at the drive-in movies where we could play on the push merry-go-round in our pajamas. I think it stayed light until at least midnight back then. Yeah-good jobs for wise-ass kids. Poky-treat??? That sounds suggestive on more than just the intended level. Reunions, no. I don't want to see what has become of anyone else and I don't want them to see what has become of me. Burgers at home are better.

Aw come on...not all the innuendos were purely coincidental, were they? I mean, they were one of the best parts of your story!

In high school I worked at the Penguin drive-in (still in business). During slow times, our kitchen staff got creative, too, but in mostly edible ways. Best creation: adding strawberry shake flavoring to Mountain Dew. Tastes like a red jelly bean.

We have a drive-in in our hometown. Going to the drive-in was the coolest thing you could do when you were like 16!
This post was hilarious! I always check under the bun too. Because you NEVER KNOW. Ugh....

McDonalds happened, Wendy's happened and Franchise America in general happened. I was in Tucson recently and I swear every third corner looks the same. Blockbuster, Walgreens and Exxon. I do love Walgreens however.

A&W drive-ins rocked. I still have one of those itty-bitty mugs. I don't remember the food, but the root beer was tops. Today, you have to go to a combination KFC/A&W or Long John Silver's/A&W and neither are drive-ins with car hops.
We still have a home-grown drive in around here - The Varsity. Nation's biggest. Greasiest onion rings you can't get enough of.

Did you say condiments? OMG would my hubby love you. That's his favorite... a meal in his own.
We used to have an A&W drive-in - complete with the Mama and Baby burgers. yum awesome rootbeer in mugs too.

Sorry for all the comments but it is so cool to look back and remember things from my past. Was that the "Red Barrel"? Someone asked what happened to the sign...it used to hang at the house next to the Swifty station but alas it is now gone.
My favorite place (mostly because I was fascinated as a kid with the sign) was the Satellite Drive-In and what I miss the most? The little train at the Bedfrod Drive In Theater. I wonder what happened to that train? I will try to refrain from posting on EVERY post I see. THis has been so fun!
