We used to diagram sentences, too. But I don't think that's descriptive of the process.
"Painful" springs to mind.

I'd say diagram, or parse, but difficult is always good, too.

I'd have to go with "parsing" a sentence as well. This is killing me to find out!

I knew it was parse too, but I got here too late. Anyone who does crosswords on a regular basis will know the word parse.

I think I had that same teacher. What a pompous ass. He told me i would never pass freshman english in college. He was right, because I tested out of it.
I pray that my extraordinarily smart little girl never, ever gets a teacher like that. Her thirst for knowledge inspires me!

Ya never know when some bit of data ya got stored upstairs will come in handy.....like playing Trivial Pursuit or as I discovered, being on the number two College Bowl team my Senior year at SDSU. I was almost shocked at the amount of stuff I knew when they asked the right questions. Alas, we were not quite as fast on the buzzer. Trivial crap also helps keep the boores away at parties.
You let students email you?

I remember when I was in First grade and wanted to check out an Entomological compendium. The librarian refused. When I insisted, the librarian called my mom, asking if I was capable of handling a book like that. My mother answered, yes, he reads well beyond his level, and that I should be allowed to check out the book. The librarian demured and insisted that I read a portion of the book for her.
I got the book.
It's never failed to amaze me how people become rigid in their dedication to principle at the expense of allowing the universe to progress.
*sigh* It's the battle I pursue - fighting these rigid thinkers.

The one thing I learned at school was that if you wanted recognition (good marks) you had to learn to be a sheep. Individuality just doesn't crack it. I'm still struggling with that one.

Oh joy, I got that wrong. Yet, I am not surprised. Love words myself, but you take the cake. And yes, you're right...ask the right questions. Why do students need to know the things that don't necessarily matter?

I went through the same thing when I was in school. I remember having to read part of a book for my teacher and the librarian before they would let me check it out. I look back now and I'm amazed I learned anything. I blame my voracious and omnivorous reading habits for most of my education.

So I have a question...Why did Clara's brothers keep dying and why was her homelife so freaky, and what are the rings of Saturn made of and why the combined seas of the eart are appoximately the same size and shape as the moon, what happened to the planet that is suppose to be between Mars and Jupiter...and any other questions you would like to answer. I will reward you with not only bonus points but I will find a lima bean shirt with a face on it!! *snicker

I've stumbled onto your blog through Blog Explosion and I must say this entry spoke to me. I'm a senior in a private high school, and most classes at my school are discussion-based and that allows us to exercise our thoughts quite well. However, I also took some college courses, in particular biology. I have always been told that I'm not a math or science person and I believe that may have contributed to my dismal performance in the class - but the teacher also helped in that by teaching us things I found interesting, like that if our pores allowed water into our bodies, we would burst in a swimming pool...and then testing us on whether or not we could parrot back the details of the Krebs cycle (nevermind the concepts behind it). Your attitude towards learning is very refreshing to me and reading this entry has been very thought-provoking. I expect I'll be visiting your site again soon.

Found you through the Edusphere Conglomorate of the Education Wonk. Good stuff. I like the idea of a question or two for kids to think and respond to. I will certainly use it this year!
