Thats the trouble with small minds, sometimes they are small enough to get under your skin.
I missed the comment or trigger that caused this, but have to say that one pre-pubescent year my favourite pastime was learning new rude words and finding them in the dictionary :-D

I always feel so sorry for our JW kids who get sent to the library while their classmates are enjoying the "Winter Holiday" or Valentine's Day parties. How can a 6 year old feel anything but left out and lonely?

I'm betting it was the 'fall festival' or whatever euphemism they're using for a Halloween party at your school that got you riled.
Some folks just aren't happy with the flavor until they pee in it.

This is part (only part but some) of the reason I want to send my kids to Catholic school. Not to be exclusive but at least if everyone is on the same page, there is less fuss over the things that should just be fun. I, myself, went to Catholic school, we had a Jewish librarian and had a damn good time playing dreidle for M&M's and respectfully discussing the differences in our belief systems. Maybe there are just too many differences in public school for everyone to be honored properly? I would think differences would be a good thing, though. It doesn't seem like it would be hard to find a way.

The kids will survive - and may prosper. My best friend from high school came from a family that would be described as autocratic. Her father was a tyrant. But she learned to deal with it and is very good at dealing with difficult bosses and other pushy people. There is hope.

Here, here! I am disgusted by the lack of diversity and acceptance in schools. We can't do ANYTHING that is part of American culture anymore, it might OFFEND! Well, it offends me when we're robbed of cultural celebrations of all sorts. I want my kids to learn about a Menorah, and make a Chinese New Year costume, as well as hand turkeys and paper Christmas trees.

I came here from the Carnival of Education. This is the type of post I always think about writing, but never get around to it. So, I am very thankful you had the cojones to write it out, because like you, I hate small minded people who make their children suffer so. I too have memories of childhood in elementary where we had actual holidays (Valentine's, Christmas, etc.), and no one had any lasting traumas. On the contrary, it was clean and safe fun of childhood. Try suggesting that now in our schools. I wrote a post on censorship recently for Banned Books Week. I think I will add this link in an update. Thanks again, best, and keep on blogging.
