That's a blog thing and not a wordpress thing. I comment on some wordpress sites and I've never registered.
Movable type has the same thing, I think it's called typekey.

I have run into that a few times, and I felt so 'excluded'! Must be like racial-profiling feels to people.

I think tommy is right... I use WP and don't require people to register on my site before they comment (at least... I don't think I do...).

I had wordpress, and anyone could comment, as long as they didn't hit on one of my blacklisted words. Then I had to moderate the comment. But it is a blog-specific thing. It's the option they selected.

Please, quit yer bitchin'- have you ever tried to pick up dry cleaning without a ticket? Since 9/11, my cleaners thinks his store is like a flight school.
All missing ticket holders are reported to the FBI. This from a guy who hasn't rung up a chatge in 8 years.
Word Press is a piece of cake next to Mr Patel's dry cleaning store.

I think that your username and password are different for each WP blog. I believe that is why it works sometimes and not others. You have to register for each individual blog, not just with WP.
