Those are some of the nicest thing anyone could have said. Thank you.
You are right- the words of In Flander's Field really do become more poignant with time.
Real greatness belongs to the common man- our fathers, mothers, sisters brothers- and if we allow it, it can belong to us.
Thank you, again.

as a vietnam veteran, i posted a personal memoir from the perspective of a va hospital... if you haven't visited a va hospital, i suggest you do so... go sit in the lobby and watch... it will forever change the way you look at veterans...

I sat my son (eight years old) down Friday morning and explained to him what Veteran's Day was about.
I did not manage to finish without beginning to cry. I work in a VA hospital, and my father was a disabled veteran of WWII. He did not live long enough to meet my son, which I will always regret.
There used to be a practice in the USSR (don't know if they still have it in Russia) where schoolchildren would compete in essay contests on the theme "What the Great Patriotic War Means to Me". (that's what they called WWII) On the holiday commemorating the end of the war, each town and city would have a ceremony at the base of the monument to the victory (which bore the names of all the men from that town who died in the war). All the old veterans, wearing their old medals, would have front row seats. The child who won the essay contest would get to lay the wreath at the base of the monument. They TAUGHT their children what their 'greatest generation' had done - we'd better start doing that.

You're a teacher? I like your site, but perhaps you should check your spelling. Cemetery is misspelled here.
