Ditto. It's pretty ballsy, especially in a college class.
I have a hard time getting my students to read, while at the same time another teacher and I are asking questions of our administration about why we no longer have a reading class but expect the students to get the same level of experience with reading by forcing them to do it in homeroom class for 20 minutes a day.
As for my students who read during my regular classes, they're do into their books they don't even know they're not paying attention in class. When I call them on it, they jump out of their seats, scramble for their work, and get busy.

I loved Ramona and Beverly Cleary, but I am not sure what you are asking?

Did they think you wouldn't notice? That room isn't big enough to hide.

Thanks to good old GWB, our school didn't make AYP in literacy (special ed was the issue) so they revamped the schedule and created many extra literacy classes. One of which is a 45 minute of SSR. The kids hate it. They want to use it as a study and while many need that extra time, it must be an SSR. Luckily I don't have that class, I would seriously consider hurting myself.

You are so right. I have a few who do the same thing; I applaud their zeal to read, but deplore their lack of respect.

I enjoyed reading this post...what exactly does this teacher do while his kids are reading? Would the class's activity be more accurately described as independent reading? SSR generally doesn't involve much in the way of monitoring or accountability, but IR does -- constantly. With SSR, the teacher may be reading his/her own material of choice, but with IR, the teacher is constantly meeting with individual students or very small groups, checking students' comprehension and use of strategies, making sure they're choosing appropriate material, etc. If the teacher's just sitting around -- I agree! Laaaaazy. BTW, ELA teachers at my (middle) school are supposed to do 5 periods a week of independent reading out of a total of 11 periods of ELA.
HF -- how are your school's classroom libraries? They tend to make all the difference for my kids.

Um. Oops. I was always one of those kids who read in class (and yes, got busted a few times). Most of the time it was because I was ahead of where the class was. Though in college I um, wound up skipping some classes that were slow :::blush::::
I'm sure I'd be hooked on every word in your class
