I've always found blogrolling a kind of strange phenomenon. I don't know how other people use their blogrolls, but mine is the list of blogs I read on pretty much a daily basis. Personally I've never heard of people caring so much about having only popular blogs on their list. But then I do lead a pretty sheltered life!

I agree with what you said about the "A-list" bloggers - it seems like once they get "famous" they stop writing for themselves and start writing for an audience, but they don't care about anyone but themselves - not to mention the fact that Dooce's page is pretty much nothing but ads - boring!

That's the saddest thing I've ever heard. Truly.
I didn't realize that there were people out there who only listed the Popular Kids. I guess I've led a sheltered life! What some other people said - I list the blogs I keep up with. Not every day, but as often as I can. Nobody else. Some are the popular kids, some are the interesting-but-not-popular kids, and some, like me, are just off in their own world.
Cool hasn't mattered since high school, and I'm embarrassed to say how long *that's* been.

I guess (like in high school) I don't understand why we can't be friends with the A list people (I've watched their kids grow up, just like my non-A list reads) and the cool kids that people haven't discovered and the "weird" kids that have so much fun and the intellectuals that make me think a little differently and the class clowns. Why limit the people and viewpoints you expose yourself to? The community of blogging is my favorite part of the blogging experience. If I just needed to write, I'd open up a new Word document.

I was once asked to remove someone from my blogroll because they didn't ever read MY blog. Erm, okaaaay.... Like you, my blogroll is the things *I* like to read everyday--even Dooce and Wil, because she makes me laugh and he makes me nuts. I'm sure she doesn't know I exist (I don't care) and while Wil does, I know I'm not even a blip on his daily radar. But I don't have to be.
My blogroll is *MY* A-list. And dammit, I'm not even on my own blogroll...
But yeah, sometimes it's high school all over again. Or maybe junior high...(I was in a fairly clique-less high school.)
And not to spoil anything, but you pretty much are one of the cool kids. Most of us are hanging around the Blogoshpere H.S. cafeteria corner table, hoping you'll trade your french fries for a Slim Jim...

Wow. You mean shallow doesn't end after adolesence?
I swear I thought grown-ups were GROWN UP until I got to be one and realized that so many hit 16 qnd never moved beyond that.
I read every blog on my small list daily.
I'm getting hits from blogs I've never read and come to find they have blogrolled me because I'm a finalist *HUGE eyeroll*.
I'll be "cool" until I don't win, or even if I do, I'll be cool for a month after that and then, nevermore.
Oh well, life goes on.
As for the picking your nose quote goes I so much prefer this:
A friend will help you move...a good friend will help you move a body.
Mama...just know this...I would help you move a body ;o)

There are also the supercool kids who never comment back on certain blogs because they're just too busy with their best buds to continue the conversion with someone beneath them.
You should write a blogger's etiquette book, Mamacita.

I take issue with the definition of "cool". In my experience, someone who is truly "cool" doesn't TRY to be cool - they just ARE. In fact, there's nothing more uncool than trying to be cool.
"Popular" is another issue and I never thought any of the popular kids were cool, just drones.
Brittany Spears would be sitting at the popular kid's table while Leonard Cohen would be hanging out in the parking lot, smoking. No one should doubt who the cool one is.

Well I do have Dooce and Wil Wheaton on my blogroll but neither of them has been there as long as you have. I do occasionally cut blogs off my blogroll but only when they cease blogging or I stop reading them because I just don't find them interesting anymore. I can't imagine that ever happening to you, your posts are way too much fun, fascinating and educational too. I hope to have kids of my own one day and frankly if I manage to do half as good a job with mine as you've done with yours then I'll be a very happy mummy

You mean blogrolls are not just for easy access to blogs you like to read? Oy. I cannot believe there are people out there trying to turn this into a popularity game. Do they realize that if they use the words "popular" and "blog" in the same sentence when talking to someone IRL... do they know the reaction they're going to get? C'mon people, even my own kids think I'm lame because I have a blog. Too funny.
I loved your post, Mamacita, thanks for writing this!!

Roaring with laughter.
If you are not cool (with passion on top!) I don't know who could be.
You're way past the A-list and into the stratospheric realm of bloggers that matter!
Mamacita, all the wealth of blogging is in the encounter of one real human being with another, and you execute that with a vim and vigor and elan that defies descripion.

I've never even read an "A list" site and don't feel I've suffered from the loss. I want to read real people talking about their lives and that's the kind of sites I have on my blogroll. (Which, of course, you are on!) I delete sites only when they cease to post for at least a few months, and sometimes not even then. They are friends to me...long-distance friend, but friends still.

For me, when it comes down to it, its the content that counts. And you've got what it takes!
Your writing is some of the best I've seen in the blogosphere. I love your thoughts, insights, and witticisms. Your blog has brought me a lot of enjoyment, and is one of the first places I check in my morning blog reading.
I have been reading your blog for the better part of a year now (I haven't missed a post since about last March). I'll have to do better about leaving comments in the future.
I have you blogrolled on my blog and there it will stay, as long as we both are blogging.
Anyhow, thanks again being one of the bright spots as I start off each day.

WHEW that is a long list to get onto ..but I have to..dear mamacita..I have taken DOOCE off my
blog because I found myself more eager to read my friends blogs..the ones that offered advice and friendship to me. I think it is the Quality of the people who comment and come to your blog not the QUANTITY of them . If you are popular... it's because of the person you are..the one who is writing the words and putting out their views of life and what they feel.We are drawn to that wonderful person. Prayers to your sister for a full recovery..with all that food and love you are supplying how can she miss!!!? HUGS..: )

I just happened upon your blog (sometimes I follow links from blog to blog to blog, like a chain, hoping to find something new and good to read) and read a few posts. I like your writing style and am going to add you to my blog bookmarks. I don't go for blogrolling, putting the links on my page myself, specifically linking to people that I have contact with and that I enjoy reading and conversing with. Thanks for giving me someone else to enjoy. Now I'll go back to lurking, as I usually do.
Thanks for the thoughts and, well, I prefer the blogs that are thought out and not commercialized. (By the way, it was my belief that the cool kids weren't having fun...they were overstressed with pretending to be perfect. Real people are much more fun.)

Okay, now, first thing off, when I first discovered you was the time you posted that thing about having Night Owl Syndrome and Vampiric Luife Style and that it wasn't your fault. I had just begun reading blogs, and I laughed so hard that I felt a muscle separate in my side.
Who gives a damn about the cool kids? The biggest nerd revenge is to become a teacher and make the next generation of cool kids venerate your ancient wisdom.
And yes, let me shamelessly grovel and ask if I can sit at your table for lunch? I'll overlook your dislike of green bean casserole--I AM getting over that-- and I will bring a nice bottle of wine. Maybe two-- the first one is just for warming up. And I will bring my guitar if you like and we can sing naughty, made-up verses to Steam Roller Blues and the old hippy songs I learned to play first.
So, can I have a place on your blogroll? Please? To me, you ARE one of the cool kids.

Hey teacher, let's redefine "cool" because this IS a cool blog! No doubt about it. Here comes the shmaltz, but it's sincere not to gain any blogroll listing, award, or popularity poop-oo that you so aptly deplore. (So do I.)
You "tell it like it is" but not to hurt others or be cool with lingo or the latest fashion, gadget or boost your stats. I find your blog one of
the most interesting and honest blogs I make time to read, because THIS is the kind of blog I like!
I wish I had more blogging time because I'd read you every day. It's been far too long since I read you, like over a month or longer. (Real life comes first with its responsibilties and *stuff* and the hours in the day are finite. So, I too am cut from blogrolls when I haven't posted in a couple of weeks. It's nice when readers want more frequent postings, but I think it's childish to move my placement on a blogroll as if I'm dead into a "corner" when my link is alive and there's a heck of a lot of archives to read while I'm obviously dealing with life out of blogland!
Hooray to blogging for yourself. That's the point. This is YOUR space. It's like the phone is for your convenience. If you don't want to answer it and choose to have voicemail and "not pick up" the phone at all hrs of the day and night when someone calls you and then that person has the gall to say"I tried to reach you" but said person did not leave a message (excpecting you to read their mind before caller ID and after Caller ID TO pay for the service that not all of us can do: so self-centered).
I've read much of your blog and can't comment on many articles I realte to, make me laugh, are so human, etc ONLY because I'm an artist and often using my hands for ohter work on the computer as I read in spurts.
TERRIFIC POST!
