Tell me what you really think.

Gravatar Hey, I know this lady that lives out in Indiana somewhere...anyway she puts out really cool CD's for children. Hmmm Wish I could remember her name!

Gravatar If it makes you feel better, I have a 4 year old and a 2 year old and I have never ever heard of Dr. Jean. So maybe she isn't as epidemic as you fear. Or maybe I don't get out enough.

Gravatar never heard of Dr. Jean, but I do love to hear young kids say "He's pining for the fjords."

Gravatar The Kodaly Method is preferable, to be sure!

Gravatar The artist that Mrs. G is referring too is an epidemic in our household as well! HUM...

Gravatar Um, yeah. Our prek teacher uses it. The kids did the Tooty Ta song for the PTA meeting last week. I wasn't that impressed either. The kids had fun though.

Gravatar GNEARGH! I'd like to strangle "Dr. Jean."

A Tooty Ta this, lady!

Gravatar Never heard of her either (the Web is the fount of all knowledge). But it sound's like she's Mister Rogers without the depth.

One of her little ditties:

The alligator is my friend,
And he can be your friend, too.

I wouldn't let a kid who's been brought up on that, loose anywhere in Florida. Unless they want to be the alligator's lunch.

'bonnie' mentioned the Kodaly Method - another good one is Carl Orff's Schulwerk.

Gravatar I've never heard of her either, and now I know my kids are not missing anything... Sounds awful.

Gravatar I was always a Raffi type, but then They Might be Giants started making kids songs. I don't know of anything cuter than my 5 year old jumping on the bed belting out Dr. Worm.

Gravatar HA! My son is actually learning the words to "My Name Is" (The Real Slim Shady)!

They don't get kiddie pap around here. The girls still remind me to put on their "ballet music" before the lights go out (selections from Tchaikovsky ballets) and they love REAL kid songs from the Jackson 5's "ABC" to They Might Be Giant's "Particle Man".

Oh, and all three are absolutely crazy for Barnes & Barnes "Fish Heads"!

Gravatar A friend of the family teaches kindergarten at a local parochial school. My favorite quote from her students: "Please, Mrs Cox, can we listen to Mr Yo-Yo Ma for naptime?"

Gravatar I agree that very young children should be exposed to many different forms of music. They are capable of learning so much more than they are given credit for. However, as a former music teacher who now teaches pre-k, I see the value in the song tooty-ta. The children love the repetitive nature of the song, and love being silly. We alos listen to classical music, rock music, reggae, r &b, etc. All have their merits. Tooty-ta is a "chant" not a song.

Gravatar I loved your comments on the poor quality of Dr. Jean's music. You took the words right out of my mouth. Her nasal, off pitch and annoying voice is a poor standard for children to hear. And the music is so redundant and boring. Just to mention, for what it's worth. The music industry requires anyone, including Dr. Jean to get permission to record someone else's songs/ melodies and a special pubisher's permission to do someone else's song and then change the words. I'm sure someone like Dr. Jean with a PhD and all would never think of ever going around those rules.
Anyway, it did my heart good to read your words about her singing??? and the condescending music she puts out for children
