Why is it such a difficult concept to grasp? If you make a choice, good or bad, the outcome is your responsibility. He made a hell of a bad choice and to not have to live (or die) with those terrible, devestating consequences, to not even own them as his own, makes me sick.

I never could come to grips with how people believe that monsters like this do not deserve the death penalty.

Part of it is that there are people that believe that all people are basically good, and that any horrific act was a result of some momentary weakness, and given the chance they could be pillars of society.

Such BS.

People are basically evil. Any good they do is a triumph over a nature that tends toward selfishness.

I refuse to believe that people are basically evil. The concept just seems to defeat the whole point of everything in the entire world and beyond.

I love your passion in this post. But you killed me with your last paragraph. I'm grappling with some harsh parental realities with my own teenage son at the moment - none criminal, thank god for small favors - but all the same. They break my heart.

I am constantly tortured by news stories of children being tortured and killed, either by strangers or their own parents. It eats me up, I actually had to seek counseling a few times over really bad ones. I agree with every word you wrote.

I agree with you, and yet I also feel for his family. Whether he is executed or not, they will always live with the knowledge of what he did, their own regrets and second guessing themselves - wondering if there was anything they could have done in his raising could have changed his choice. Not that it could, just that's the kind of second-guessing parents do.
