It makes you want to just grab some of these parents and knock their heads agains the wall, doesn't it?
I once had a grade 2 student staying at my home for 4 days before her father noticed she was missing. 4 DAYS. When he called the cops to report her missing, they informed him that they knew where she was (I'm not that crazy, of course I told them) and he showed up after midnight to get her. Then he yelled at me for interferring in his life.

We used to have a comment (culled from a couple mouthy local talk-radio types) when we saw similar types in line at the supermarket:
"I smell Trailer."
Or (same talk-radio types' comeback to a phone in):
"Tell me. Does your 'home' have wheels, or do you just have it up on blocks?"

ANY pblic dole should automatically include surgery to ensure that person will not reproduce.
IF the above scenario was in California, there would be a good chance of some illegal immigrant being involved in it somehow.....
And our whole state is suffering for it.

Sadly true, but certainly true. It is absolutely, completely, and one hundred percent unbearable. It is appalling, disgusting, wretched, and I would like to say “unheard of,” but unfortunately it is heard of. Thank you for sharing that. We have to be reminded that there are some people who do not have the things we have, and they can not help it in any way.

Hey Polski, you don't know crap about illegal immigrants. In the poor neighborhood where I live, the immigrants are standing outside at 5:30 am waiting for their ride to their FIRST job of the day. Most have two or three.
I have nothing but respect for the folks who pick our crops, process our food, wash our cars, work in kitchens, do factory work...all that stuff the lazy white meth freakies won't do to save their lives. And all the stuff the rest of us benefit from by having cheap prices, not to mention all the payroll taxes they pay and never get back - because they work with fake SS cards.
Anyway, I agree, adults should act like adults and take care of their kids. I think people who commit violent felonies should be sterilized, because there is a proven genetic link to criminal behavior.

AMEN! You remind me of the time my mom told someone her children needed to have orange juice everyday. She replied that she couldn't afford it. My mom countered with "if you can afford cigarettes, you can afford juice". The woman was mad at being told that, but my mom was right!

That's what you say about a friend of mine - his name is Bill and if you read the very first comment on scotty's page, you will see a real comment from Bill - the real Bill ... It's a game, only a game mamacita, like crocuses bravely peeking up through the snow before the squirels eat them. They, unlike little amber, are NOT fragile little blossoms, they are winter hardy bulbs, no differently than pink hemorhoids peeking through an anus. Put upon earth for fools who have empty thoughts as a simple muse ... like teeny rodent penises poking through the snow, they bloom in sun or shade, in fine soil or shit - they are but illusions for fools to notice - the fresh and still warm blood of a cat squashed by the snow tires of a surburban 4 wheel drive melts the snow into red shadow pictures ... the secret, the
da vinci code of amber's alert young mind peeking bravely from her snowy grave ... god's plan to balance the flowers and dead cats ... it was time for them to die. If fragile blossoms and cats can die in such splendor, then so can we - the winter of our incontinence ...bluewhiteflash and BAM, like a miscarriage we are gone, flushed smears of stillwarm blood, melting the snow into red art ... red art alert amber alert bluewhiteflash

It must be painful to be a teacher, see these things, and not able to say or do anything.
One thing I am beginning to realize is that there are 3 types of parents. The really good ones, the really bad ones, and the ones in between. A child is lucky to have either really good or really bad parents. Eventually, they are taken away from bad parents because they mess up so badly that the situation draws attention. Then, hopefully, they can be in a safer environment. It is the parents that hover in the middle that I despise.
First, they are the ones that feed the kids with crap, but at least the kids eat, dress the kids in crap, but at least the kids are dressed, and don't bother to bath them everyday, but at least they are bathed every once in awhile. They are not bad enough for the government to take the children away, yet by leaving the children with them, they are doomed. They drink, smoke, do drugs, but never to the degree that draws any serious attention from the government. They are the worst, because the children will end up just like them, mediocre or below poverty and lost, but at least alive.
Thank you for your posting. It's just sad that I seriously doubt that these parents you refer to read good blogs during their free time.

There was a principal recently in NYC who drew fire from the press for announcing that he wasn't running a babysitting service, and that parents would have to pick up their kids on time.
He later said that he of course wouldn't abandon kids on the street, but that parents were really abusing the hospitality of the school. I really can think of few things more irresponsible than forgetting your own kid.

Sometimes, when I have a nursery full of babies and I know the circumstances that one is going home to isn't a good one (mother tested positive for cocaine - meaning she used it within 3 days of delivering, abusive mother/father relationship, etc), I will look at that baby next to another one. They look the same. They are equally precious and full of potential, both miracles worthy of the same awe but one just won't get a fair shake. Not from day one. It kills me. It kills me that they will be sent home with these parents to begin with when there are so many people who don't think of children as a burden, who can't carry a baby to term, who would literally give anything to take one home. Not that every situation has to be perfect (certainly there are loving parents with low incomes and/or incomplete formal education who sacrifice to do the best they can by their children) but when you know there is a threat to a child's well being (like a mother who is so addicted that she can't refrain from drug use when she is 9 months pg) how can we do it? Its not as if life will get easier with a baby or a child. Babies are hard and babies withdrawing from cocaine are even harder. Why are parents rights more important that the children's rights to a clean, safe start in life?
Sorry for the tangent.

When I started interpreting (sign-language) in an elementary, I was shocked. Shocked at how children came to school hungry, underdressed, an unloved. It makes me ache to see these children this way. After my first year, I could point to any child in the classroom who was not read to.
I take my boys to a local daycare. This public daycare takes CHINA kids. These kids are put in daycare, paid for by our state, so these incapable parents can stay at home to smoke and drink all day. The state would rather pay to have these children away from their idiot parents. I can see the point, but I am sorry. These parents need to get off of their duffs. If they can't get a job, maybe the state should mandate parenting classes.
Okay, I am done with my rant. LOL! I thoroughly enjoy your blog! I pray that my boys will have teachers that are so caring as you!

Mamacita, have you encountered what I have on newsgroups -- the total arrogance of the Welfare Bum?
The bragging about being on welfare?
The spitting at "all you Suckers So Stupid You Actually WORK"?
The "I Get Everything For FREE While You Stupid Suckers HAVE to Work"?
"KEEP WORKING YOU STUPID SUCKERS SO I CAN GET EVERYTHING FOR FREE!"?
And (usually around tax time) getting your face rubbed in the fact that the Parasite is the REAL top of the food chain?

Thank you for being gutsy enough to lay it out the way it really is, even though we are considered politically incorrect to voice it.
When I was adopting my son from Moldova I remember thinking of the irony of having to go through all the paperwork, U.S. fees, background checks and spend literally thousands of dollars to get him (and worth a thousand times more), and having parent meetings with a woman who had 5 kids (spec.ed) she didn't give a rats patooey about and was pregnant with another. I think some of our parents come to the meeting just because it is a social occasion (and of course some won't come at all) I live in a small town with about 12 bars on main street and if I choose to go down and get drunk and get pregant the same night no one can stop me, even if I have no job,no car, no home, and too many kids to feed on a 6 figure income. But, and here is what kills me, I can't think of a good solution!
I do think if a woman tests positive for crack when she comes in to a hospital to give birth that there is no way in hell that baby should go home with her. Sorry, she forfeited that right!

There was a "Sue" screaming at a "Polski" about illegal imigrants. Sue conveniently overlooked the key word -- illegal. Illegal means they are criminals and gawd, how illegals just hate being called criminals and fujitives while they leech off the largesse in this country. Illegals expect -- no, they demand -- and legally steal benefits that citizens can't even touch. Recent mass "marches" support their demanding attitudes. Our politically correct run amok lawmakers continue to give away the store.
Then there was a recent post by Mostly Cajun where he quoted a really, really angry social worker who was an advocate for abused kids. The best of four scenarios was an infant forced to suckle the mama dog because the druggie parents couldn't "afford" to buy formula for the baby. At least the dog's milk was probably drug free.
The absolute worst was about an 8 y/o boy who was prostituted out to pedophiles for money to pay for mama's drugs. Boy in custody. Boy will never, ever be normal. Makes the death penalty sound good and reasonable.

This is one of the major reasons I never went back to teaching. The barely clothed, hungry kindergartener who told me he was sleepy because he was at the convenience store all night while his mom played video poker. I wanted to bring him home with me so badly. I can't bear to think of how he is now. He would be graduating this year. Only somehow I doubt it.

The world is full of them. And they breed true, unfortunately- those lessons learned at 6, or 8, get passed on to their own children.
