Gravatar Both of my 13 year olds love Sherlock Holmes, probably due to the Mystery series shown on PBS. I've gotten them hooked on Mystery, and that leads to them reading Agatha Christie, Conan Doyle, and a bunch of other great writers. I like the mystery genre a lot myself, and I think that every kid should be introduced to Sherlock Holmes by middle school. Kudos to you for thinking the same.

Gravatar I really enjoyed reading your post. You are so correct...to misjudge a child and to assume is the worst thing we can do as teachers.

Gravatar Thank you for being a caring insightful teacher. Lord knows we could use more of you.

Gravatar I even teach kids that the "smartness of your brain" is equivalent to the physical connections among brain cells. We connect everything so we can be smarter.

It is truly unbelievable that the only (and I mean the only) children's stories kids know are the ones Disney has put on tape. They don't know kid games or stories or what to pretend or anything that wasn't plugged into the VCR when they were little. Scary -- cultural literacy is pretty much non-existent any more.

Gravatar Nicely done, Watson. You are a genius.

Gravatar Mr. kenju is a Sherlock Holmes nut, and has at least 5-6 books about him or the stories. I agree with you - any connection made is a good one.

Gravatar Kudos to you for introducing them to such an upscale character like Mr. Holmes. You're right about connections, that's the goal and it looks like you got it. Good Job.

Gravatar Speckled Band was the first Sherlock Holmes story I ever read. (Though considering my age at the time, I didn't understand half of it.)

Then, when Grenada TV of England did their as-written Sherlock Holmes adaptations starring Jeremy Brett, the first one of those I saw (on PBS's Mystery) WAS The Adventure of the Speckled Band. Full Circle. As Written. WOW.

Gravatar Love to read you on my lunch 30 minutes. I tell my students that one of my goals is to help them be more culturally literate, so that not only will their lives be more interesting, but they will also be more interesting to others. I realize I have never done Holmes with them. I guess I will have to now! Wouldn't want them to go through life not understanding NSS!

I always play deaf when I hear blue words in the hallways or bathrooms, but I know teachers who swoop down like hawks to write the discipline referrel. Personally, I hate writing them for anything-- way too much trouble. You pretty much have to be a juvenile delinquent in my class and not respond to any of my various and sundry methods to get a referrel from me.

Gravatar I'd like to offer a "Dig deeper, Watson."

If your students get the "No shit, Sherlock" joke, and are willing to make the connection between the saying and the character, try out the "Dig deeper, Watson" reply when you get the chance. See how they fare with that.

Gravatar That scene where Holmes bends back the rod has always been one of my favorites, too.

Great job of teaching. My first reaction to your noting that the kids had never heard of Holmes was to feel helpless frustration at how bad it's become; your reaction was to dig in and fix the problem.

And this is just another demonstration of the failure of the "you don't need facts, you just need to know how to look them up" theory: those kids would have gone the rest of their lives without even wondering who Sherlock was, much less taking the time to go look him up.

Gravatar It is great that they made that connection. I would have told them so, as well, but I probably would have told them that they need to watch what they say. You probably should tell the other teacher as well, unless he/she is a total loser anyway!

Gravatar :D
I like this post very much.
Wish you were my teacher for that section, buut, you know Pam did pretty great to...

Gravatar Great story - thank you!
