Tell me what you really think.

Its those that are not making much of an effort that seem to get to us......we teachers need to look at all our students, the VAST majority of them, that are making the effort, that are progressing, that are learning. We are making a difference.
Keep your head up! Keep smiling.

There is no way you are ineffectual. One Susan does not a bad teacher make. You cannot reach everyone. Susan was not taught well before she came to your class, otherwise she would have realized that she couldn't wait until the last minute to write the paper. Go to bed, and dream good dreams about your good students. Wake up effectual again (you always were).

nah, nah, nah. You know better. Susan has been working at this incompetency for years before you came along and she's been nurtured and supported by ineffectual parents and teachers that let her get away with it. Go to bed and get some good sleep and dream a sweet dream.
I love these posts that are so much the essence of you.

Nope, not ineffectual. I'm sure Susan took something with her that day. Hold your head high.

We can only give our students the opportunity to learn; we can't force the learning on them.
At least she left after the first few minutes of problem causing.
I hope the next day is a better one.
As far as absences, I have one class that had one person out of 24 show up last week. My other classes are still full, but this one class keeps getting smaller and smaller.

And the firly brinkmire claims another victim.
Don't sweat it - you're still the best teacher I ever had, and I know from good teaching.

Believe it or not, but Susan has been doing this all through high school -- so has her mother. I don't understand those who keep doing the same thing while expecting different results. You have been effective in holdingthe line and NOT letting Susan and her attitude (and her mother) push you around.

You aren't ineffectual. These are college-level students. The ineffectual teachers, if any, were those in elementary, middle, and high school.

Wha . . ? I can use I have STUFF TO DO as an excuse!? Well, in that case, I have STUFF TO DO and need to leave work NOW (and get paid of course for the whole day.)
Geeze, if I had only known I would not be so far behind.

I think you need to talk to a 9 year old that feels in fact that you are truly impacting her in a positive way.
HG would read books because for school she had to. Let me just say...with the ones you have sent us over the last year she has started to enjoy reading and writing.
That...is more than you know to me.

Sigh... I just wanted to let you know that some of us don't enable the students in high school either, but because their parents do, they feel like they can keep getting away with it.

I have to keep reminding myself that you're talking about college-level students, but they still come off sounding like petulant eight-graders. Sigh.

How terrible! (On Susan's part) I do hope she learns now that it seems she has someone that does not tolerate incompetency. You are the most intriguing person I have ever met. The world would do wondrous to have more of your kind.
