I'm not sure I'm going to put up a tree this year. Stinky, the incrediable gas producing kitten is hell on wheels and climbing the curtains & the back of the couch, attempting to shred every piece of paper in the house and attacking anything that even thinks of moving. I don't think that a Christmas tree would stand a chance of surviving
Ohhhhh...you need to do the American Thing and after you put away the lights Just So, and then discover they either tangled themselves or just died, you go out and buy all new lights. Do this 6-7 years ion a row, and you have a lot of useless lights in a box...
We have a pre-lit tree we bought last year; it has lights and is fiberoptic. But you;re right, not enough lights. The Spouse Thingy added at least four more strands. It'll be quite nifty when he puts it up this year 
That's what I do did last year and will most likely do again this year. Most of the twinkly lights nowadays do not have a fuse "box" that will open. It's cheaper to buy a new box than to try to find the fuse to fit anyway.
My lights NVER work and I fiddle with them for hours until they finally work. I think today is the day I do it. UGH.
My mom got a prelit tree last year with 800 lights on it. Half are clear, half multicolored. You can have one or the other or both. AND it is hinged so no more trying to color code the limbs.
I do feel your pain. Those fuse boxes are a real bugger to open. And of course the fuses are so tiny and my fingers so fat it's almost impossible. I had lights outside last year and kept blowing fuses.... six in fact. I finally figured out which strand was doing it and got rid of them. Good luck.
I love the decorations. I love talking about each ornament with my daughter as we put them on the tree. But the actual decorating I can do without. I wish there were little elves that could come in while we slept and fix it.
