Phantom by Susan Kay
It is what you would probably call a "bit of fluff" nowhere near the classic book but interesting for several reasons.

It is written in several sections, each in the first person of a character in the Phantom's life... example, his mother, Christine, Raoul, etc.

It has a surprise ending. One that is probably much more to your liking (at least in part).

It explains WHY the Phantom turned out this way.

BTW, my brother performed with the first traveling company of Phantom of the Opera, for eight years before he went to Europe and started his own opera career. Nyssa and I were fortunate to see the stage production an obscene number of times. I always thought Christine should have chosen the Phantom.

While the Phantom is much more romantic, etc. than Raoul and/or Philippe, the thing about his character that always bugged me enough that I would not choose him over the Brothers Comte de Chagny is his jealousy and childishness. If a man I was dating said, "You have asked, I'm afraid, the only thing in my power that I cannot grant. Please don't ask it again." to me, I think I would have some choice words for him. "Excuse me ... uh, did you just tell me what I can and can't do after I decided to live in a dark basement forever just to be with you? Yeah. I didn't think so. That would be a deal-breaker, I'm afraid."
