Tell me what you really think.

Gravatar That was incredible. I've gotta read that short story.

I've got a kid right now who knew when the midterm was, went on two field trips in the meantime, and now thinks he deserves an extention since he wasn't here. To me, "midterm" means in the "middle of the term," he was reminded of what he would miss when he went on these trips, and I have a class blog with the review materials posted.

The answer, by the way, was NO. And he took that midterm on Friday. C'est la vie.

Gravatar Well, I'm glad we've learned that the ends justifies the means.

Gravatar No, ELC, what we've learned is the ends is the logical result of the means. -cp

Gravatar Why are you so mean? I just don't understand you.

Gravatar This is, of course, required reading for all your classes? Should be. Some of them might even understand it.

Gravatar Isn't it called "Responsibilty" ? For instance, today, I graded papers. Why? Because I am the teacher and am responsible for providing my students with feedback on their work towards meeting the academic objectives of the State.

Big part of the problem in today's world, is the lack of people being responsible for what they do and for what needs to be done.

Nice Post, Mamacita.

Gravatar No cold comfort, Teach?

Gravatar Anonymous, you must be insane. Mamacita is the kindest nicest lady in the world, and she just wants her students to learn how to behave now so the world won't bite them in the ass later.

You might not be mean either, but you sure are ignorant when it comes to teaching. Besides, where's your contact information? You're a coward.

Gravatar Annie is spot-on regarding our Mamacita, but, she needs to bless us with her own blog!! ;~)

Gravatar I'm sorry I don't like to post personal information over the internet. It has nothing to do with a "coward." I thought comments were welcome. Anyway, I guess I don't know your mamacita as you do. I will bow out and wish you all the best in your blogs. You sound like you are all good friends, so carry on.

Gravatar I do welcome comments, Anonymous, but I don't understand why you think I am so mean. That hurts.

Gravatar We all know that Mamacita is one of the best teachers around and that life is full of hard lessons. The younger you learn those lessons the better your life will be.

Gravatar Oh, I love this Mamacita. I'm printing it to give to my teens to read. Wonderful lesson.

Gravatar I like the analogy and I think your point stands, but I can see a loophole, and so will a lot of students. The laws of physics in the story aren't changeable. The rules laid down by teachers are, and students know that teachers can suspend them at will. That's why so many kids think they can do whatever they want and then whine and wheedle their way out of the consequences - and why teachers who won't bend the rules for them are "mean."

We know that Bonfire on the Ice."

Question, Mamacita and Massmind, regarding the "Creative Spelling" fad in schools, i.e. there is NO such thing as correct spelling.

I have never encountered an Internet search engine that did not require exact spelling. Or one that factored Self Esteem (TM) into its search algorithm. How, then, are those "creative spellers" going to surf the Web like post-literate Netizens?

Gravatar " No, ELC, what we've learned is the ends is the logical result of the means. -cp" No. I was right. An innocent person was murdered so others could (possibly) live (longer). That sounds exactly like "the ends justifies the means" to me.

Gravatar I love it. So many times the kids and the parents, and too often the administration/guidance, work to get around work.
School is as much about learning to jump through the hoops as anything else, assignments, tests, labs, quizzes, they're all hoops, avoid them at your own peril.

Keep 'em coming!

Gravatar hmm.

The message has elements of truth, but there is also a piece missing: you *can* change equations which are based on incorrect assumptions.

How did we decide the lifeboat needed three less people? Space? Water? Food? Before we evict three to certain death the fundamental facts should be challenged.

If we are hoping to build a generation of independent, creative problem-solvers, is it not our obligation to ensure that we focus on the correctness of the equation as well as its balance?
