Tell me what you really think.

Gravatar "In times of change, learners inherit the Earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists." --Eric Hoffer

This one is my favorite. As for the Montessori quote, I love the sentiment, but it doesn't seem to be holding as true lately....

Gravatar My mother, a teacher, learned to use a computer when she was in her 70s--and she embraced the transition from typewriter to computer/Internet wholeheartedly, not grudgingly. Wise woman!

Gravatar We had to get Jawa Girl's name on a bank account yesterday, and it was clear the branch manager did not like that newfangled typing box she had to deal with.

It's 2007, people. Computers ain't goin' away.

Gravatar Over the years, I have known many teachers who fit that last paragraph of yours. But they had tenure, and refused to leave. They don't tend to be self-policing, you know.

Gravatar Administrators that don't understand what damage a computer can do are daft in my opinion.

Gravatar Learning to use computers in my classroom is one of the smartest things I've done. It was hard as heck, but I think the kids respect when you are willing to learn. Good role model too.

Gravatar Some excellent quotes. I think this one is going on the wall in my classroom: "The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn." --Alvin Toffler

Great post - thanks for sharing!

Gravatar Nice roundup of quotes, thank you Mamacita!

I worked, just last year, on coaching a Principal. He had great ideas, Wikis, you say? I smile. But didn't quite get the internet. In fact he didn't quite get the computer.

He 55 years old, he had spent 2 decades as head of 3 schools and had just taken over another assignment. Organised, meticulous with detail yet stuck in the 1960s. He dictated his
e-mail, that was printed out and shown to him. He corrected it, another draft was shown to him. Again some minor error, again more time (for him, his secretary, and the teachers who shared his secretary's computer) wasted- not to mention the egregious waste of paper.

Similar situation in the classrooms- great ideas, but constrained by his own inability to execute them more quickly, inexpensively and with more finesse.

We removed 2 weeks from his summer holiday and gave him 12 hour days in Computer Education.

From his recent e-mail (written by him!) his investment of 2 weeks seems to have led to an across-the-board improvement in school function- administrative and curricular. He even got an e-mail id especially for his students to mail him- for the kids the old man has never been cooler!

Gravatar I figure, as long as I know how to sharpen my pencil, I'm set for life...
