That has to be the most bizarre policy I've ever heard of... I can't even wrap my mind around it... Maybe it's early and I need some coffee, but I don't know if I'm outraged by it, or if I should burst out laughing at its utter ridiculousness.
It's beyond comprehension... it had to have been presented, discussed, modified and finally agreed upon by Dutch government bureaucrats...What were those meetings like? Who could think of such a thing? Who would say; "yeah, that sounds like a great idea"....I find it all baffling.
One more thing... what's next ...forcing all immigrants eat pork sausages and ham in the name of "civic integration".

I started reading about housing thousands of Chinese immigrants and I thought, "this is satire, right?" I read it again. "Got to be satire."
OMG. Am I the only one for whom this comes out of the blue? I just checked the headlines at MSNBC, NYT, and WaPo. Nothing,although I did learn that Jessica Simpson snubbed the President. Maybe she will soon find herself in a place where she can make a lot of new friends who can teach her Chinese.

kansas...like you I thought at first this was satire. With continued reading it just made me literally sick to my stomach with such a sinking feeling that the country is becoming so openly off track on this issue(and so many others)that it will take marching in the streets to force our law makers to start doing the right things for the country-instead of big business and the religious whackos.
Now that little know contract to Halliburton for detention centers becomes a lot more clear. Chertoff didn't just wake up today and decide to inter Chinese people-this is a plan that must have been in the making for some time. First they came for the Chinese....wonder how he decided on Chinese first anyway..did they put a list of immigrant nationalities up on a board and throw darts and the one with the most hits get to be 'detained' first?
Nanette-reading that article is just depressing-that kind of stupidity and racism always is. Why can't people see the beauty in other cultures instead of being infected with apparently a sickness in their own souls that makes them think they are better than other people.
I know, chocolate... plus there is something just so vile about using food as a weapon against poor and hungry people. All in the name of hate.
And that reminds me of one white supremist group that collected donations of food/clothing and took it down to New Orleans but wanted to dispense it to white only people. Luckily they were basically told(by white people) to take their donations and get the hell out of there.
It's like citizenship tests in many places I think -- a kind of ritualised humiliation. And yes it absolutely is racist and xenophobic. I think rituals such as these are part of the same conceptual apparatus that built Sangatte and Woomera -- they're symptoms of the same illness.
