Back to Man Eegee - Latino Político

Gravatar Back in January, the LA Times did a multi-part series on the current state of both the UFW and the Cesar Chavez Foundation.

Since reading it, I have thought of it almost every day.

I have started several times to build a rant around snippets, and have not done so, here is the link to it:

LAT multi-part series on UFW and Chavez Foundation

It is my hope that current events will be a spark to turn things around, for both union and Foundation.

Y aunque no quieras creer querido amigo;
Esto sucedio en los Estados Unidos

(From the song "Cesar Chavez" by Los Tigres del Norte)

Gravatar Could someone recomend to me a book (one that is readily available) about the Chavez Labor Movement? Thank you in advance.

Gravatar beautiful diary Manny...

Thanks for the Dobbs reference..I saw him spouting that mierda and it made my blood boil..what a hypocrite...He obviously has no understanding of the life of Chevez and to use his name to further his racist point of veiw was mind numbing.

Gravatar I came across some rebuttals from the UFW and the Foundation (I can only find the union's info now, tho)

Gravatar wonderful diary. I rec'd you over at Big Orange. Everyone else should too.

Gravatar Great diary Manny, thanks and as I mentioned over at the Trib..I'd be all for getting rid of Columbus Day and replacing it with Chavez Day.

Gravatar Thanks for the link Manito, always two sides to every story, I'm surprised the Foundation has not done something similar in the way of rebuttal, especially since Christine is becoming a politician. Or maybe that is the reason they have not, as one of the major criticisms of the LAT piece had to do with both union and Foundation focusing more on politics than getting porta potties for the farm workers living out in the open.

The whole situation with that, it is impossible not to think of the King children, and the King Center, a lot of parallels there, and quite possibly unrealistic expectations in both cases.

Cesar Chavezes and Martin Kings do not come along every day, and the shoes left by both are quite large...

chox, I think people should just start doing that - just celebrating the day as Chavez day, and as more people do it, maybe officialdom will follow!

Gravatar Thanks ManE! Very informative. I'll have to read more about him. I saw Dobbs talking about him and was wondering how he'd mischaracterized him - I just knew he did since he always does that.

I'm putting together my thoughts about this Slate article but thought you'd appreciate these quotes:

CNN says it is just thrilled by the transformation of Lou Dobbs—formerly a mild-mannered news anchor noted for his palsy-walsy interviews with corporate CEOs—into a raving populist xenophobe. Ratings are up. It's like watching one of those "makeover" shows that turn nerds into fops or bathrooms into ballrooms.
[...]
TV pundits need to radiate certainty for the sake of their careers. As Lou Dobbs has demonstrated, this doesn't mean you can't change your mind, as long as you are as certain in your opinion today as you were of the opposite opinion a couple of days ago.

Gravatar Hey, Manny, did you catch any of the demonstrations downtown today?

There were thousands of kids down there to demonstrate their love and concern for their human kindred of every color and to demand an end to the borders that marginalize human.

They were AWESOME kids-about 3000 of them, many, many more than is claimed on the news.

My heart was full of the realization that I was in the middle of a civil rights demonstration led by high-school kids!

I was so proud of them.

Gravatar Humans.

Preview is my friend, preview is my friend...

Gravatar I had a feeling that the numbers I was hearing on TV were um, inaccurate...

Thanks Viv!

Gravatar Wonderful post. Reading it saddens me though because I don't see any figures like him or Martin Luther King today. Both men combined charisma with credibility and that faciliated broad appeal.
