Fair enough Manish - your points make sense to me. The lack of info is also no reason to cast aspersions on any person.

Manish, Where are the great grand children of Mangal Pandey? Where are they currently living? What are they doing for a living? Please wrie something about this. Do Congressmen know that not "only" a particular family of India have made "sacrifices"? Should mambers of such families not be made "Prime Minister" as well IN RETURN for their services?

Read both the posts...yep, Ramanand's concern is good in its own place, but I tend to agree with u more...
My logic here is simple - even if Mangal Pande was in the influence of Bhang, and triggered off a revolution..so be it ... at least , even in his intoxication, he paved the way for the rest of the 'sane' nation to follow. If in the due course, we get to 'see' other positive (and perhaps larger than life) aspects of his life, what's the harm...all human beings, have a story on them...if Bill Clinton's autobiography can be a best seller , why not allow MP's life be shown also...

That sounds great Ramanand
Thanks Mandar
Alka, they are living in Balia, where Mangal was born. From what I have gathered, they are probably lower middle/poor class village folk.
I had heard about them when they had complained that a lot of facts being shown in the movie are not true.
And I know what you mean by taking the dig at Congress. I feel the same.
Yeah Deepak, you are right about the name of the movie. I haven't seen it though.
That is true. We should not ignore even a smaller contribution, and his was a very big one.

Never saw it. Was out on a dinner with some friends. Not even sure who got what.
Anyways, they have lost their relevance, Deepak.

Hi, now since I know your mind so I just thought of updating you with mine.
OK!
Mangal Pandey, an-unknown known hero.
we may not find him in respectable places in history, narrated by goras.
and we as indians never wrote our history.never. (except for some jain/budhist monks)
also we as a country never actually get inspired by the actions, but more from how the actions are represented.
So, when we were fighting we needed a hero of our own, managal pandey was our first hero.
why?
imagining the socio-political conditions of india at that time, we could have a hero only from the hindi speaking region. this must have been done to ignite/ispire more populous areas of country.
if you can get a hero from UP, the most populous state it wud be better. AND if you can get a hero from a hindu society(most populous) in then-religiously-minded country, it wud be even better.
we can not now guess who might have created mangal pandey. but he was a beautiful invention.
the northern parts, the locals and the hindus in particular did get inspired.
this inspiring-effect can be seen even in later part of freedon struggle.
the hindus actively took part in freedom struggle after the mangal-pandey story. the same hindus did nothing for 1000 years to free themselves (except for prithviraj chauhan's fight).
So, If mangal pandey existed or not but we needed a HERO, and we did make him one.
and he did ignite the people for fight.
so, even if he did not exist, it was worth inventing one hero. long live the myth!
