oh yes, I totally agree. I had similar experience when I visited Pune. In Lonawala, we went into a shop for tea, look around for a space to sit, waited for somebody to come and attedn to us and finally left when nobody did, all while the shopkeeper sitting there and looking !

Well, I always buy something on 'Dhanteras'. Since I have been out of home for three years on this occassion in a row, so its usually kitchen stuff only :D Last year, it was a doodh ubaalne ke liye pateela , this time it was chai banane ke liye pateeli (err..saucepan, as the lady at the shop explained -though i doubt any of the Agraiites , or for that matter any Indian, would ever make any sauce in that !)
We have Raja Ki Mandi here, which can be called the real 'middle class' market here! Well, the shopkeepers are a cross between the ones you have mentioned, somewhere in between -not wholly rude, but neither very polite either!
Recently discovered another similar, but smaller scale market, at Rajpur Chungi...

oh I agree with you completely.... having shopped in both Aminabad and Laxmi market, I actually wandered back into memories!!! but LKO population is always polite.... way way more polite than the politest puneite - who is at best, brusque...

I too remember shopping in Aminabad. I don't know anything about Pune. But here in NOIDA, more or less same culture prevails. In U.P. they say, ye log jaldi agha (satisfied) jate hai. That's why probably we don't have a Bill Gates.

That was a lovely description! I don't know much about Pune...but Aminabad!... WOW!
I was hoping there would be a mention of Garbar Jhala!!! I think that little world was one of the most unique places in India! The one place where men wouldn't dare to tread, because any toes they treaded on would HAVE to belong to a lady
When I was living there, one of the lanes that connected Aminabad to Latouche Road had a "Budhdhu Chaatwala" who made the best chat in the whole wide world.
Sadly, when I returned to Lko after many years, I heard that the old man Budhdhu Lal died and 'beton mein bantwara ho gaya'!! I believe there are his offspring, still in existence, in the same business...just that the standard has taken a beating!
Your photo album of Aminabad was wonderful! I think you have captured the spirit of the place quite comprehensively! Loved the pictures of the Patangwala, the choodi wala, the dalmoth ki dookan... (yummmm no one makes Dalmoth as good!) and the Chana jor garam wala!! Thank you SO much for the nostalgia! Oh... and Sunder Picture Palace reminded me of a movie called 'Hulchul' the original...OP Ralhan one that I had seen there as a kid!!
Ah... Lucknow...mera Lucknow... I Love the place... I miss it...yet, I am afraid, I have moved so far on, that I don't think I can ever go back and LIVE there!

Tell you what, I have just been to Garh Barjhala this october when I was in Lko. Its the same old place
Budhdhu Chaatwala in Old Ganeshganj was very famous, but heard his name ages after!
Oh that Hulchul was a well made movie! How a radio program caused so confusion and misconception for people a partiular surname!

Wow!... I never knew that it was 'Garh' Barjhala... I always thought it was garbarjhala... a nonsensical name for a place that was so confusingly amusingly messy!!
Tee Hee... I am so amused at my ignorance of so many years!! My mind always questioned as to why a place should be called Garbar Jhala....but the answer was always "coz there's so much 'garbar' in that tiny little place" :D
