if you are talking about funny books, i would rank books/stories from Marathi writer Phule among the best. i do not understand Marathi and i have read english translation by Gaurav Sabnis of some of his stories (on Gauravs blog) and while reading them i have laughed as much as i have when watching "Jaaney Bhi Do Yaaron, Golmaal, Chupke Chupke, Andaaz Apna Apna, Jaaney Bhi Do Yaaron, Baby's Day Out etc".
he must be hell of a comedy writer from whatever tailor i got from Gaurav's translation. very eager to read rest of his writings if available in english.

I hope you have seen 'Biwi O Biwi', 'Angoor', 'Lakhon Ki Baat', 'Chasme Buddoor', list is really long, every movie is a gift for Hindi audience. In books I would love to quote "Raag Darbari' by Sri Lal Shukla.
