Defective box, most likely. The dirty "secret" about digital boxes is they use the SAME antennas you already have -- if you're within 20-30 miles of a tower, you shouldn't need a special antenna.
Does your box have an on-screen signal indicator that you can bring up? If so, and you bring it up, and it's more than 40% full, you should be getting crisp video and audio.
A normally-working box will either get a solid picture, no picture at all, or a picture with stutters and audio-pauses (if the incoming signal is too low).
